Airline Carry-On Dimensions: What Will and Won't Fly
Choosing the right carry-on luggage can be stressful, especially if you haven’t double-checked the dimensions of your bag before arriving at the airport. Airline carry-on dimensions vary, and searching for information on maximum carry-on luggage sizes can be time-consuming. At Briggs & Riley, we like our trips to be as stress-free as possible, so we compiled a list of airline regulations for you. Scroll down for our airline carry-on luggage size chart, or continue reading for helpful tips on the standard carry-on size and personal item size.
Standard Airline Carry-On Dimensions
Unfortunately, there is no standard carry-on size as airline carry-on dimensions vary by carrier. For instance, Aer Lingus requires carry-on bags to have a length of no more than 18.5 inches. While AirTran and Frontier allow carry-on bags as long as 24 inches. However, a general room of thumb is to aim for 22 inches x 14 inches x 9 inches, including handles and wheels.
We offer carry-on luggage and carry-on backpacks that fit these common limits, allowing you to travel with ease.
Charges for Carry-Ons
Beyond maximum airline carry-on dimensions, you must also consider if the carrier charges carry-on fees. Most low-cost carriers now issue an additional charge for carry-on bags, and the fees go up the longer you wait to pay. Some of the major airlines also require payment for carry-ons if you purchase an economy ticket. Check your airline's requirements carefully before you book your flight.
Carry-Ons vs. Personal Items
Besides your carry-on, most airlines allow you to bring one personal item on your flight. The term "personal item" covers various pieces, including:
- Purses
- Briefcases
- Laptop bags
- Diaper bags
- Small backpacks
- Totes
- Camera bags
- Additional types of bags
Personal Item Size
The size limit of personal items vary, just like airline carry-on dimensions. The overarching rule is that a personal item must fit under the seat in front of you, but most airlines have specific rules about personal item dimensions. Typically, they should not be larger than 18 inches x 14 inches x 8 inches. It's always a good idea to check your airline's website for their exact measurements to avoid any surprises at the gate.
How to Maximize Total Space
Regardless of their dimensions, using a carry-on and a personal item can help you pack more efficiently. Here are some tips:
- Pack Essentials in Your Personal Item: Keep things like your passport, wallet, phone, and any items you'll need during the flight in your personal item. This way, they're easy to access.
- Use Packing Cubes: These can help you organize and compress your clothes and other items, making it easier to fit everything.
- Layer Your Items: Place heavier items at the bottom of your carry-on and lighter items on top. Use the pockets in your personal item for smaller things like chargers and snacks.
- Use Compression: Many of our carry-ons feature one-touch CX® expansion, which expands for more packing room and then compresses for maximum efficiency.
Following these tips can even help you pack a suit in a carry-on. Headed out on a major trip? Read our recommendations on what to pack in your carry-on for a long flight.
Why Use a Carry-On?
Given all the questions about airline carry-on dimensions, it's natural to wonder why you should bother with a carry-on. Why not just check a bag? There are many good reasons to use a carry-on, including:
Convenience and Efficiency
One of the biggest perks of using a carry-on is the convenience. You can breeze through check-in and boarding since you don't have to wait in long lines to check your bag. Plus, you can skip the baggage claim area when you land, saving you precious time.
Cost Savings
Another great benefit is saving money. Many airlines require higher fees for checked bags than for carry-ons. By sticking to a carry-on, you can avoid these extra costs.
Security and Peace of Mind
When you travel with a carry-on, you always have your belongings with you. This means less worry about lost or damaged luggage. You'll have everything you need right above your seat or under the one in front of you, giving you peace of mind throughout your flight.

Choosing the Right Carry-On
Airline carry-on dimensions aren't the only consideration when selecting this essential piece of luggage. Here are some other critical features to consider.
Durability
You want a bag that can handle the bumps and scrapes of travel. Look for materials like ballistic nylon or polycarbonate (PC), known for their toughness. A durable bag will last longer and protect your belongings better.
Weight
If your bag is lighter, you can pack more without exceeding airline weight limits. Lightweight carry-ons are easier to lift into the overhead bin and roll through the airport. Check the bag's weight when it's empty to see how it stacks up to other models.
Compartments
Good organization can make your trip much smoother. Look for carry-ons with multiple compartments and pockets to help your stay sorted and easy to find. Separate sections for things like shoes, toiletries, and electronics can be very handy.

Frequently Asked Questions About Carry-On Luggage
As a leader in the luggage industry, we have a wealth of knowledge to share. Here are answers to some of the common questions we receive.
Can I bring liquids in my carry-on luggage?
You can bring liquids in your carry-on, but there are restrictions. Per TSA requirements, liquids must be in containers of 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less, and the containers must all fit in a single quart-sized, clear, resealable plastic bag. This includes items like shampoo, toothpaste, and lotions.
Are there weight limits for carry-on luggage?
Some airlines have weight limits for carry-on bags, while others do not. Scroll down to our carry-on luggage size chart for details on the major airlines' requirements. Generally, weight limits range from 15 to 22 pounds (7 to 10 kilograms).
Can a 24-inch luggage be a carry-on?
Unfortunately no. The standard carry-on size is typically 22 inches x 14 inches x 9 inches and a 24- inch bag is too large to bring on board most economy standard airlines.
Are you allowed a backpack and a carry-on?
Yes, you’re allowed to bring a travel backpack, as it counts as a personal item. However, make sure that it can fit under an airline seat. Also, make sure that your airline allows a personal item, as most airlines have their own rules.
